MINOS Event Files

Where to find the files

At Fermilab the files have been placed directories under:
  /afs/fnal.gov/files/data/minos/d4/

Run info

The output files are all FZ exchange format GAFs. They have the name gminos_rrrrr_ss.fz_gaf, where rrrrr is the run number and ss is the random number sequence (normally grouped in runs of 5000 events).

Variations

There are many parameters to vary and combinatorics quickly get complex.

All events are generated in a "far" detector configuration. The MFLX=0 (histogram) flux method is used. There is a center coil that contributes to dead regions in the tracking, but the mass is not accounted for in the generation of neutrino interactions. In every case there are three supermodules (with 1m separation). A supermodule contains either 200 (4cm Fe) or 400 (2cm Fe) detector planes.

Iron "B"
  1. 4cm plates (8m octogon, old field)
  2. 2cm plates (8m octogon, old field)
  3. 6cm plates (8m octogon, old field)
  4. 8cm plates (8m octogon, old field)
Detector "D"
  1. LST 1cm x 1cm profile with aluminum comb and
    9.0% Ar, 70.0% CO2, 21.0% isobutane gas
    (currently no digitization - only hits available)
  2. FLS 2cm x 2cm cells
  3. FLS 1cm x 2cm cells (smaller transverse segmentation)
  4. FLS 4cm x 2cm cells (larger transverse segmentation)
Flavor "F"
  1. no oscillation
  2. (nu_e --> nu_mu) (nu_mu --> nu_tau) (nu_tau --> nu_e)
  3. (nu_e --> nu_tau) (nu_mu --> nu_e) (nu_tau --> nu_mu)
  4. single electrons
  5. single pi+ hadrons

The run number is constructed from the conditions: "BDFxx". The "xx" differentiates different runs of the similar conditions.

If people have a particular configuration that they'd like to see run before the others they should inform me (Robert Hatcher) and I'll push it up in the queue.

When processing the single particle files, the "xx" code is broken down further with the 10's place designating the energy and the 1's place for distinquishing similar runs. The default configuration was to generate 4000 events of each setup. The energies were:

  1. 2 GeV
  2. 5 GeV
  3. 7.5 GeV (skipped)
  4. 10 GeV
  5. 15 GeV (skipped)
  6. 20 GeV
  7. 25 GeV (skipped)

Notes:

The stated cell sizes are approximate to account for cell wall thicknesses.

Anti-neutrino "oscillations" follow the same pattern as the neutrinos. The flavor designated in the "nu" table column is the predominant type -- not exclusive! The original flux contains the appropriate amount of nu_e and anti-neutrino contamination. These get oscillated by the same fixed permutation. The original flavor is also available in the NeuKin Eset. Thus those runs with labelled mu still represent what would be seen if no oscillations occurred.
