Getting Help with MINOS software
Helpful Hints
-
Check the web pages - these contain lots of
up-to-date documentation.
-
Ask someone local to your site.
- Is it already set up at your site?
- Have they already solved your problem once?
- Can you piggy-back off their setup? Share libraries?
- Questions concerning your local setup (eg. where CERNLIB resides)
are not something outsiders can easily help you with.
-
Phone vs. E-mail
- Phone for interactive exchanges (problem solving);
this may be more productive than a series of e-mail
exchanges.
- E-mail (written "permanent" record) for requests
(eg. additions, non-bug fix modifications, etc.)
are less subject to faulty memories.
-
Be prepared - details matter.
- despite their reputation error message often do
impart critical clues.
- you should be familiar with your local setup
- understand the specific run conditions that caused the failure
- be prepared to:
- send an e-mail copy of your output
- try things interactively
- "throw" an Xterm window to a different machine; eg.
xterm -display nebula.astro.indiana.edu:0
